Chronic Fatigue Q & A

What is chronic fatigue?

Chronic fatigue is a complex condition characterized by unexplainable, extreme fatigue. In addition to feeling extremely tired and lethargic, you may experience other symptoms such as:

  • Memory problems
  • Poor concentration
  • Indecisiveness
  • Sore throat
  • Unexplained muscle or joint pain
  • Headaches
  • Swollen lymph nodes in your neck and armpits

While chronic fatigue causes extreme tiredness, the condition can disrupt your sleep patterns and lead to sleep disorders as well. At the same time, insufficient quality sleep can also worsen your daytime sleepiness and other symptoms.

Chronic fatigue often worsens after physical or mental exertion but doesn’t get better with rest. The condition can be debilitating and lead to lost work and strained relationships.

What causes chronic fatigue?

The causes of chronic fatigue aren’t fully understood. However, doctors and medical researchers believe that if you have chronic fatigue, you are hypersensitive to any type of exertion. Your risk for chronic fatigue increases as you get older, and the condition is more frequently diagnosed in women than men.

Chronic fatigue is often triggered by another illness or event. For example, you may develop chronic fatigue after a severe viral infection. It’s also believed that immune system problems and hormonal imbalance contribute to chronic fatigue.

How is the cause of chronic fatigue diagnosed?

Dr. Joseph provides consultations and sleep studies to diagnose any sleep disorders linked to your chronic fatigue symptoms. He frequently uses a polysomnogram (PSG), which is available both at his office as well as with equipment that you can use at home. A PSG monitors and measures your brain activity, movement, and respiration while you sleep.

Additionally, Dr. Joseph uses a maintenance of wakefulness test (MWT) to gauge your risk of falling asleep during the day and determine if your chronic fatigue interferes with your ability to drive or operate machinery.

How is chronic fatigue treated?

Dr. Joseph provides customized treatments to improve both the quantity and quality of your sleep. He can prescribe medication to regulate your sleep patterns and increase the amount of time you spend in deep sleep, which is when your body restores and rejuvenates. He may also suggest cognitive behavioral therapy and other lifestyle modifications to improve your sleep and your approach to getting quality rest.

If you’re always tired, Dr. Joseph can help. Call Rajiv Joseph MD PA or schedule an appointment online today for expert diagnosis and treatment for chronic fatigue and other sleep disorders.
